Arcadia Public Library (ARC)

Library Services

Arcadia Public Library is pleased to offer interns a broad introduction to public library service. The intern will spend time working in Adult Services, Children’s Services, and Technical Services. After observation and training, the intern will be paired on the public desks with a librarian and assist in answering questions. The intern will be exposed to collection development processes, government documents, local history, public program planning and publicity. If the intern is interested in cataloging and has already completed relevant coursework, the intern will have an opportunity to work with the Library’s computerized cataloging system in Technical Services.

The intern will be under the general supervision of the Library Services Manager for Program and Collection Development and will also work directly with the Principal Librarians for Adult Services, Children’s Services, and Technical Services. Opportunity will be provided for observation in the Circulation and Information Systems sections. The intern will also be encouraged to participate in staff meetings, a Library Board meeting and MCLS workshops and meetings.

The internship is designed to meet the following objectives:

• To gain experience and familiarity with the library’s reference, children’s and technical services sections in a diverse environment
• To gain experience and familiarity with library management procedures
• To gain experience in understanding the issues involved in maintaining/managing library automation systems

Burbank Public Library (BUR)

Branches

The Burbank Public Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for interns to work at two branch sites. Burbank's branches offer the full spectrum of library service, from reference to children's programming. Our intern will gain hands-on reference experience, both adult and children, using the library's Sirsi iBistro online catalog and other print and online resources. If interested, the intern may assist with children's programming and class visits and/or assist with implementing features on iBistro. To round off the experience, the student will be involved in collection development (using Baker & Taylor's TitleSource II software), inventory, and preparing booklists and pathfinders. If you are looking for an opportunity to get to know your patrons and to do a "little of everything", our branch experience is for you.

Monrovia Public Library (MON)

 

Youth Services

MONROVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY EMPHASIZES SERVICES TO YOUTH. Job Description: Assist the Youth Librarians in answering youth reference questions; assist youth at the Youth Technology center; assist in preparing and implementing youth programs such as storytimes, class visits and other literary events; assist with collection development projects; perform technical services’ functions on youth materials as needed.

Palos Verdes Library District (PVP)

Children's Work in a Branch Library

Working with the branch librarian and part-time children's librarian will assist in preparing story times, select and weed children's materials, deliver story times and help plan the expansion of children's programming at a busy branch. This branch is located next to a middle school and provides an excellent opportunity to work with young children as well as the preteen. Also may provide reference service to all ages. A unique opportunity to upgrade skills of service to all age groups, and experience the "do it all" work of a small branch, while specializing in work with our youngest readers.

• To gain an overview of the varied and interrelated activities of a community library branch

Reference

The primary duty of the intern is to work on a central library reference desk, providing both in-house and telephone assistance using the fully-integrated automated online catalog. Always working with at least one professional librarian, the intern answers both in-depth and ready reference questions, offers instruction in the use of the online catalog and Internet, provides reader’s advisory assistance and helps patrons use library materials. Resources include electronic databases from Gale, EBSCO, and ProQuest.

Learning objectives for this placement might include:

• To gain experience in Reader’s Advisory services
• To gain experience in instructing patrons in the use of public access computers, electronic resources and the Internet

Young Adult

The intern will assist with running the Teen Advisory Board. Assist with local middle and high schools relations and programming events with multicultural emphasis. Intern will work with Young Adult Specialist and Young Readers Department Head, providing reference and readers advisory, creating bibliographies and Internet pathfinders

Young Readers

Under the guidance and supervision of the Young Readers Department Head, the intern will plan, implement and evaluate a weekly storytime. Additionally, the intern will assist the public desk answering Young Readers reference and readers advisory questions, serving children up through age 17 as well as parents, caregivers and teachers. Intern may also be called upon to assist with other Young Readers programming projects as well as classroom visits.

• To gain experience planning, conducting and evaluating series of storytime programs
• To gain experience in using reference interview, online databases and print reference materials to assist patrons in answering reference and readers advisory questions
• To gain experience in conducting children's programming and outreach activities

Santa Monica Public Library (SAM)

MAIN Library – Reference Services

 

Reference Services Division provides reference, information and referral, and bibliographic instruction services to Library customers through direct public contact, telephone, and online. Possible internship projects include: collection development (selection, weeding, management of a specific subject area); creation of instructional brochures and/or multimedia podcasts on Library materials, collections, and services; creation and implementation of a special subject bibliographic instruction class; training in and analysis of interactive “chat” reference. Major internship duties include providing direct public service at the reference desk.

Fairview Branch Library

Located in the southeastern part of Santa Monica, Fairview provides services to a wide range of ages and interests with an emphasis on children’s programming. Some programs are conducted in Spanish. This is an ideal internship for anyone exploring the possibility of working in a public library branch setting as it is a busy branch with a diverse clientele. Internship projects can be structured to suit the interests of the individual and could include childrens, YA, and/or Adult programming. Duties include assisting with reference and readers’ advisory services under the supervision of the Branch Manager.

Ocean Park Branch Library

The Ocean Park Branch, located at the corner of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, serves the southwest corner of Santa Monica and nearby communities such as Venice. This historic Carnegie facility, which was expanded in the mid-1980s, offers a wealth of children’s programs and is expanding its adult program offerings.

Thousand Oaks Library System (THO)


Technical Services

The Technical Services Department has a full-time supervisor and 1 full-time librarian. The department processes orders online, catalogs materials, receives and processes serials, physically processes new materials and mends old materials. The intern will receive guidance by a mentor and support staff and will be given limited “special project” assignments, primarily in the cataloging unit. Experience will be obtained in capturing bibliographic records, editing MARC and authority records utilizing LCSH headings, Dewey classification, and AACR2 rules. Projects planned include "cleaning up" the Innovative Interfaces database and authority files, cataloging donations, and downloading/editing video records to upgrade old ones.

Library Information Systems

The Library Information Systems Department has a full-time supervisor, 1 full-time systems librarian, and 1 full-time senior library assistant. The department is responsible for the integrated library system, the library’s web site, library computer security and equipment, and the library’s local area network. An intern will have the opportunity to experience typical work duties of systems staff, as well as work on short-term projects related to web development.

Children's Services

The Children’s and Young Adult’s Services Department has a full-time supervisor, 4 full-time librarians, and 2 part-time library assistants. The department is responsible for reference, readers’ advisory, collection development, programming, service to schools, etc. for patrons ages 0-18 and their families and educators. Staff works at the Children's Information Desk approximately ½ of its time. An intern would be involved in all professional aspects of the work of this department.


*Please note that for Fall 2008, the Thousand Oaks Library may be able to offer an internship opportunity that combines experience in one or more of the departments listed above, depending upon the interest of the intern and/or library staff and resources available. One internship per the Fall quarter will be offered as long as staff and other resources are sufficient to ensure a mutually satisfying experience for the intern and the Library. Prior to placement, interns must also pass a pre-selection interview.

Whittier Public Library (WHI)

Adult Services - Reference - Central Library (or Branch)

Your experience in reference will consist of elements that will provide a good orientation to the work of an adult services librarian in a large central library. You will be working with experienced reference librarians at a busy public desk using a large reference, circulating and digital collection to serve a diverse group of patrons. You will participate in collection development and will be involved in the implementation of a new Sirsi integrated library system. You will be mentored by an experienced member of the staff who will be available to plan your activities, review your progress and provide guidance. Working successfully in this department requires flexibility and a commitment to providing excellent service to a community that expects a lot of its library.

Children's Services - Central Library (or Branch)

Working in the Whittier Public Library’s active Children’s Department will provide you with exposure to all levels of programming, including class visits, school visits, working with volunteers in our newly created Homework Center, storytime, and assisting with special events such as our “Lunch at the Library” program”. Our children’s staff uses a large collection and facility to serve a diverse population of children. Your experience at WPL will include mentoring by one the premier children’s librarians in the area. You will be exposed to the collection development process and reader’s advisory service. The work requires energy, enthusiasm and flexibility. Hours will be flexible and your professional goals will be considered in customizing your assignments.
