FILL Participation Requirements

FILL is an MCLS program designed to promote public librarianship through paid ($2000) internships or practica at MCLS libraries. Library school students are mentored by professional librarians while completing either a 120 hour internship (UCLA) or 135 hour practicum (SJSU/Distance Education) during a single school term. FILL is funded by MCLS and local participating libraries.
Interns
To participate as a FILL intern, a student must:
- have completed all core courses and any other requirements required by your School to be eligible for an internship/practicum;
- be in "good standing" at either the UCLA Department of Information Studies or San Jose State University Distance Education (SJSU/DE) program;
- submit an application (cover letter, resume, and written statement);
- and complete an interview with a prospective library.
FILL interns may not:
- complete an internship/practicum at a library where they are currently
employed; - nor complete more than 2 FILL internships/practica during an academic year
Libraries
To participate as a FILL site, the library must:
- be a full member of MCLS*;
- share the cost of the internship payment with MCLS
- provide a description of its internship/'practicum' program; and
- assure the intern is supervised by a professional librarian with a master's degree in library and/or information science.
*MCLS full member libraries are: Alhambra, Altadena, Arcadia, Azusa, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Calabasas, Cerritos, Commerce, Covina, Downey, El Segundo, Glendale, Glendora, Irwindale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monrovia, Monterey Park, Oxnard, Palos Verdes, Pomona, Redondo Beach, San Marino, Santa Fe Springs, Santa Monica, Sierra Madre, Signal Hill, South Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Torrance, and Whittier.
