Steve Teeri planned, constructed, and manages the Secret Lab (http://www.aadl.org/secretlab) in the basement of the Ann Arbor District Library's Downtown Library. Previously he worked at the Detroit Public Library, where in 2012 he founded the HYPE Makerspace. Steve has presented about library makerspaces throughout the country, and has worked with organizations including ALA, PLA, Harvard University, and the US State Department.
This workshop will conduct a survey of current library makerspaces around the country, gleaning useful tips and best practices. Discussed in detail will be the Secret Lab located within the Ann Arbor District Library, opened in September, 2015. Takeaways will include furniture considerations, the benefit of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and what activities are appropriate in a library setting. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share experiences, with a strong Q+A at the end.
