You are invited to celebrate 20 years of MeLCat!

Oct 1, 2025 | MeL

MeLCat is 20! To mark this amazing anniversary, we invite you to join us in person or online to celebrate.

At the MLA conference reception, registered conference attendees can find MeL team staff from the Library of Michigan and MCLS in the Lake Erie Room on the 2nd floor. Stop by to say hello, win prizes, record your MeLCat stories, and take a selfie with a life-sized “Mittens,” the MeLCat Mascot. You can also taste “Mitten’s Harvest Potion,” the MeLCat signature cocktail/mocktail, brought to us by American Fifth Distillery, and pair it with a MeLCat cookie. The MLA conference reception will take place at the Library of Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6-9 p.m. Eastern.

For those unable to attend MLA, there will also be a virtual event in November. Join us to share MeLCat stories, follow the travels of Mittens throughout the state, and spin the virtual wheel for MeLCat prizes. Stay tuned for more details on the virtual celebration.

The MeL project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan.

Introducing the newest member of the MeLCat team: Mittens, the MeLCat mascot!

This summer, Mittens will travel through RIDES to help the MeLCat libraries celebrate the 20th Anniversary of MeLCat.

Begin planning to take some photos of Mittens at your library. Be creative! Use the adventures of Flat Stanley and the Elf on the Shelf as inspiration. Instructions will be included. Some suggested activities with Mittens:

  • Assist with MeLCat and RIDES processing
  • Pose Mittens with unique features, statues, or artwork at your library
  • Attend story time or other library programming

Use the hashtag #MittensLovesMeLCat to post about Mittens’ visit to your library’s social media, website, etc.

Mittens has a lot of libraries to visit, so send Mittens to the next library on the list within a couple of days. If you don’t have time when Mittens arrives, leave your library listed to route Mittens back to you. Feel free to share your photos, posts, or links via the MeLCat listserv. If you’d like to print your own Mittens, the files are available on MeL.org under the MeL Promotions Toolkit, along with the MeLCat 20th Anniversary logo.

Contact melcathelp@mcls.org if you have any questions.
