Librarians from eight academic libraries met at MCLS on July 22, 2011, to begin formation of the Shared Monographic Print Storage Pilot Project. MCLS is facilitating the project for member libraries, with the goal of using a collaborative approach to reduce local expenditures while maintaining access to monographic titles.
The pilot will develop a distributed, shared storage system to retain a preservation copy of discarded monographs within the group, and one or more additional copies will be accessible to other Michigan libraries. The project will use a data-driven process to identify duplicate holdings and valuable titles within the participating library collections. Initial data collection is underway.
