Each fall, MCLS takes stock of the past year’s accomplishments and also focuses on the year ahead. This month, I’ll cover some strides we’ve made, share some highlights from the MCLS Board of Directors’ recent annual retreat, and preview our 2022 MCLS Annual Meeting on Nov. 29.
First and foremost, we aim to deliver on our Board’s vision for MCLS and the libraries we serve in terms of some main principles:

MCLS’s popular Virtual Dialogues are coming back, and we want to know: what do you want to talk about? Fill out this brief survey to let us know what is top of mind for you right now at your job, organization, and community.
We will host a Virtual Dialogue every other month beginning in January 2023 to give staff at all levels and from libraries of all types an opportunity to connect around the topics that are important to you! Our first Dialogue is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 10:30am Eastern (9:30am Central); watch for registration information on the email lists and our website soon. We look forward to bringing back this opportunity to connect!
As MCLS prepares to embark on a strategic planning process in 2023, we will engage with the library community in Indiana and Michigan through a series of Community Conversations and one-on-one interviews.
These Community Conversations are based on engagement tools from The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation and are designed to take between 90 minutes and two hours for up to 12 people. The conversations give participants an opportunity to reflect on and describe what their aspirations for the library community are, and then more deeply explore the concepts shared. This engagement process is an opportunity to hear from the library community throughout Indiana and Michigan about their aspirations and concerns, which will help inform future priorities of MCLS.
We will facilitate 12 virtual Community Conversations via Zoom between Feb. 6 and 18 at a variety of times. The Conversations are open to any library staff in all types of libraries in Indiana and Michigan. More information including dates and registration details will be coming soon!
MCLS will have an exhibitor booth at Indiana Library Federation Annual Conference 2022: Libraries are the Place to Be! (Nov. 14-16).
Whether or not your library is a current member of MCLS, we'd love to see you, tell you more about how we can support you in supporting your community, and hear about how you see libraries branching out and growing. Stop by to meet some of our staff, win great giveaways, and much more fun. We will also have a drawing for non-members to win a free one-year membership. We look forward to connecting with you!
TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten sends fun activities parents/caregivers can do with their babies and preschoolers to make any time learning time. Developed by librarians and based on the Every Child Ready to Read program that encourages caregivers to read, write, sing, talk, and play with their little ones everyday, TALK activities are designed to get kids ready for school success.
Indiana public library staff are encouraged to attend a free webinar on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 11am Eastern (10am Central). Presented by Jodi Krahnke, Head of Youth Services, and Angie Martin-Schwarze, TALK Program Assistant at Ypsilanti District Library in Michigan, you will learn details about the service, the toolkits, and how you can use text messaging to help improve school readiness in your community. This webinar is only open to Indiana public library staff and is worth 1 hr/1 LEU.
With the transition to ConsortiaManager, MCLS is now able to provide product quotes to libraries via the system. While libraries can continue requesting quotes either through the MCLS vendor web page or by sending an email to services@mcls.org, they also have the option of requesting quotes through the CM system. To make a quote request in CM, click on the “Catalog” link (pictured below) on the main menu bar where you can search for products.
When MCLS receives product pricing from the vendor, this information is uploaded into the requesting library's ConsortiaManager account. Libraries will receive an email indicating pricing has been provided and can then access the quote through the “Open Catalog (Newly Added)” link (pictured below) in the upper right corner of their account.
If you have questions on the process, please reach out to Group Purchasing at (517) 939-1382 or services@mcls.org.

We are glad to announce that over one million MeLCat requests were placed during the state's 2022 fiscal year ending Sept. 30. MeLCat consistently exceeded one million requests per year until 2020, so it is great to see the one million request threshold crossed again. A huge "thank you" goes out to all staff at participating libraries as over 93% of all MeLCat requests were filled during the fiscal year!
The one millionth request was placed by a Dexter District Library patron for Inner and outer peace through meditation, which was filled by Wayne State University.
MeLCat is a statewide multi-type library resource sharing program. MeL was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Additional funding is provided by the State of Michigan and the Library of Michigan Foundation.
