MLC and OCLC

Yesterday I received a message from one of our members that started out: “I just found out today that OCLC will be terminating the agreement with MLC on June 30, 2009. There seems to be some “buzz” going around about this.” I wasn’t too surprised to hear about the “buzz” as there has been quite a bit of talk about OCLC’s new service model. The reality is that there will be some changes, but other things will stay the same.

In September 2008, OCLC announced their intention to implement the new support and service model. That will happen on July 1, 2009. The big change is that the new model centralizes support at OCLC. In July, questions that you formerly sent to MLC about cataloging or ILL will go to OCLC directly.

MLC retains a key role in the new service model. We will continue to offer the same high-quality training on Connexion, ILL, MARC, and other OCLC-related topics. In addition, we will send you your monthly OCLC invoice.

We are in the process of working out a transition plan with OCLC, and you will hear more details as our discussions continue.

MeL Delivery Evaluation Report

An outside evaluation of MeL Delivery service was conducted from July – December 2008. The intent was to gather empirical data about how the system is functioning and where improvement can be made.

Highlights of the study:

* ProMed’s performance is substantially above industry standards of 95% for non-critical shipments.
* The most significant improvement would be to increase the number of locations on two day service to three day service.

MLC and INCOLSA to consolidate e-resources group purchasing

Over the course of many months, the leadership of Michigan Library Consortium and INCOLSA have been discussing ways in which we can collaborate to improve service and reduce costs for our members. We are pleased to announce that starting in October INCOLSA members will have access to the sizable e-resources collection of MLC. The combined purchasing power of the two organizations will allow both to offer more value to their member libraries.

You can read the news release for additional details on the combined group purchasing service. For more information, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions document on the MLC website.

Congratulations to Sandy Yee!

Our congratulations to Sandy Yee, Dean of Libraries at Wayne State University and MLC Board member, who has been elected to a six-year term on the OCLC Board of Trustees!

“I look forward to helping to smooth the governance transition by working closely with colleagues on the 2008-2009 Members Council,” said Ms. Yee, who will make the transition from Members Council President to Board member. “After reading the documents and listening closely to the discussions about this move, I am confident that OCLC is positioned to continue to grow and add value to the membership worldwide.”
