Passionate Pink Day @ MLC

Last week, MLC devoted a day to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Our best wishes go out to all our friends and family who have been affected. And we thank the Komen foundation for all it has done to help breast cancer patients and survivors.

I promise, on my honor…

Associated Press reported Monday that L.A. Boy Scouts will now be able to earn an activity patch for learning about respect for copyrights.  Read the story here.

Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and will learn how to identify copyrighted works and infringements.

Strategic planning for public libraries

Check out the article by Stu Wilson, “Saint Paul’s Strategic Solution,” in the October 1, 2006, issue of Library Journal.  This is Stu’s second article in a three-part series about strategic planning for public libraries. It is definitely worth reading for any public libraries considering embarking on the planning process.

The first article in this series, “Saint Paul’s Strategic Plan” (LJ 9/15/05, p. 34), documented how the St. Paul Public Library created a strategic planning process, up to the point of hiring the planning consultant PROVIDENCE Associates, Inc.

This second article details the process phases, including data gathering and drafting the plan itself. A future article, focusing on implementation of the adopted plan, will provide insight into the long-term value of strategic planning at the library.

Some of you may remember Stu Wilson from his days at the Library of Michigan in the late 1980s when he worked for Michigan Literacy Inc.  He’s now the Director of Development and Communication for the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library.

More Academic OneFile Webinars scheduled!

This summer, Thomson Gale added Academic OneFile to MeL. It is the largest collection of peer-reviewed, full-text periodicals available covering multiple research disciplines. In addition to the 9,000 academic journals, Academic OneFile also includes full-text of major newspapers — such as the full New York Times from 1995 — as well as hundreds of podcasts, video and reference content from premier publishers.

Due to popular demand, there are several more Webinars being offered in the next few weeks to accommodate MeL users interested in learning more about this database.  To get a glimpse of this new database, please sign up for one of the dates below.  You will only need a phone and a computer to participate in these live conferences.  Each session is free and lasts approximately one hour.

MLA Thursday–Using Multimedia Tutorials to Instruct via the Internet

Jackie Licalzi and I attended an excellent session presented by Emily Barton of the MSU Libraries about using Camtasia Video to create a training tutorial. These tutorials can be used with patrons or with staff.

Camtasia is software to capture screen images and activity from Windows desktops and add narration and special effects. It is available from the TechSmith Corporation in Okemos, Michigan.

During the session, Emily created a simple video explanation of how to play Solitaire. She used a two-sided handout with step-by-step instructions for this process. And she made it look very easy.

She recommends short videos, e.g., 1 to 3 minutes long, with quizzes added. This would be a great way to provide some refresher training, or even to add “visuals” to our MeLCat manual, for library staff using MeLCat software to manage statewide lending and borrowing.
Thanks, Emily. For a copy of her handout, Emily’s email address is: bartone1@msu.edu
