Hi, I’m the Internet

This week, Unshelved offers a great spoof of the “I’m a PC, I’m a MAC” campaign with comic strips on “Hi, I’m the Internet, and I’m the Library.” Starting with the June 25 comic strip, Unshelved’s Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum have hit the nail on the head yet again. :)

National Public Library Construction Survey

The following is a message from the State Librarian. Michigan public libraries are encouraged to complete the survey. The deadline is August 31. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
The state librarians’ association, COSLA, is organizing a survey of public libraries in each state to gather data on building and renovation construction. This is being undertaken in order to compile data for use by State Library agencies and/or COSLA to advocate for federal public library construction funding. In conjunction with this effort, I am sending you the link to the public libraries survey developed by the New Jersey State Library which will enable COSLA to collect this data and respond to it. The New Jersey State Library IT Department has posted the survey online at:

http://www.njstatelib.org/LDB/cosla/cosla1.php

Please participate in this survey effort if at all possible and complete it online by the deadline of August 31st, 2007. Thanks in advance.

Nancy

Full-text Springer journals added to Wilson Select Plus on FirstSearch

About 120 new full-text journals from Springer, which includes more than 16,000 records, have been added to the Wilson Select Plus database on the OCLC FirstSearch service. Wilson Select Plus is one of the full-text databases that Michigan residents receive free-of-charge through MeL Databases.

The full-text is available in PDF format. Coverage is from 2004 through April 2006 and eventually will extend back to 1997. Springer is the second-largest journal publisher and the world’s largest publisher of science, technology and medical texts.

Bloomfield Library lawsuit update

Larry Neal of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library has written a wonderful explanation of the problems with the plaintiff’s case in Goldstone v. Bloomfield Hills Public Library. Click here to read his letter in the Macomb Daily.

For links to the documents filed in the case, see MLA’s web site.

Thanks, Larry, for your cogent argument against Goldstone’s attempt to legalize library tax evasion. Let’s hope the Michigan Supreme Court agrees!

State Aid Payments Released

State Librarian Nancy Robertson issued the following message on June 11, 2007:

Dear colleagues,
I am very pleased to announce that the moratorium on the FY07 payments of state aid to public libraries has been lifted. The first half payments that are still due will be released effective immediately. For the second half payment, although full payments will be made, the July 1 payments will not actually be released until August 15. Even though this entails a further waiting period, I hope it will be a significant relief to know that the payments will be forthcoming then.

I know this has been a difficult time, and the FY08 situation is still up in the air. However, this is good news and speaks to the effectiveness of the efforts of all areas of the library community to get the word out about how significant these state aid payments are for library service to Michigan’s residents.
Best regards,
Nancy

MeLCat Queue Update

Recently, we have heard questions about the ability of new libraries to join MeLCat, and we wanted to clear up any confusion.

MeLCat funding and staff have not changed. We will add libraries three times a year in 2007 and 2008, as usual. Our goal is to add 120 new libraries in 2007 and so far we are on track to do that. We have been able to accommodate almost all libraries that requested a 2007 implementation date. Our goal in 2008 will be to add 120 – 150 libraries to MeLCat.

To join MeLCat, libraries need to file an application.  MeLCat staff will contact each applicant to schedule the library in the implementation queue.

Please feel free to contact MLC MeLCat staff if you have questions.
